My Olympus Pen E-PL8 First Impressions

Just over two weeks ago now I purchased this beautiful silver and black Olympus Pen E-PL8 with the standard pancake kit lens (14-42mm 1:3.5-5.6).

Photos of the new Olympus Pen - E-PL8 in black and silver with the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14‑42mm 1:3.5‑5.6 EZ Pancake lens

First impressions

I love it! In my opinion it's the perfect compact camera, it's light, stylish and provides truly beautiful photographs!

The camera is very easy to use, although due it being compact I sometimes find the buttons too close together. I really like the functionality of being able to flip the screen down for a 'selfie' mode however compared to other flip screens I feel it's not as user friendly when it comes to mounting on a tripod.

What is the image quality like?

Here are a few randoms shots (with no editing) that I've taken to help give you an idea on quality. Although I'm yet to have purchased a 17mm or 45mm lens, the kit lens has provided me with great bokeh images. Overall I find the images clear, sharp and on par with many DSLR's.

What is the Video quality like?

I'm not sure how I feel about the video quality yet. I currently use my Canon S120 for videos and so far I still prefer this to the E-PL8. I find the Pen's video distort a bit as you move around. I do however feel the Pen's video is a lot sharper than the Canon's at times. In all honesty it's not a camera I would purchase for it's video quality alone.

To Conclude

Before purchasing this camera I read many articles which said "if you have the money invest in a DSLR rather than an Olympus Pen" and in some ways I agree with this. If you're looking to make a career out of photography then making that investment in a DSLR is going to be worthwhile. For me personally I needed a compact camera I could travel with at a price I could afford and luckily the Pen fitted the bill!

I definitely recommend picking up the E-PL8 and giving it a try, it's the perfect step up from a point and shoot and a great camera to learn on before diving into DSLRs.
